Lucy York is an aspiring mechanical engineer working as a shot girl serving watered-down drinks to drunken frat boys at Jezebel’s Bar & Lounge. The job isn’t so bad—it pays her bills, and she’s managed to make a surrogate family for herself at the bar. But now, at 24, she’s ready to spread her wings and fly north to attend UC Berkeley and, maybe, distance herself a little from the all-consuming social scene at Jezebel’s.
Then her boss hires a new bouncer, Norm, a literature dork who seems like everything a bouncer shouldn’t be: tall, gangly, sweet (and, you know, named Norman). But as she gets to know him, ol’ Norm turns out to be everything Lucy never knew she wanted and the best friend she’s ever had. He’s not a bad bouncer either.
One obstacle to their happily ever after: the owner has a strict no-dating rule for employees. If anyone at Jezebel’s finds out she’s dating a bouncer, Lucy will lose her job, her surrogate family, and the money she needs to go to Berkeley.
But, if she loses Norm, is she losing her best chance at happiness?

And whoever said that geeks can't be hot?
Norm's sense of humor and complete geekiness has completely gotten to me.
And that is what drew Lucy to him too.
But with the no-dating rule presented upon them by their boss, how would their attraction turn into something more?

What I like about this book is that there is more to it than just the brewing romance between Norm and Lucy, though the changes happening in their lives stem from it. There is acceptance, freedom and peace with oneself. You may think these themes recur for most of the books out there but there is something that's different with the way Ms. Matthews presented it. It's the way she wrote about Norm.

Norm is not your typical guy especially when you get to read from his side of the story. I can sense the genuineness more from him than from Lucy particularly when it comes to their relationship. I say this because he wants things to work between them that he is even willing to risk losing his job for her. He's also deeply affected when he felt like Lucy's just using him as a bed-buddy. For me, it's quite rare that a guy is the one chasing after a girl, declaring his love more openly. At the end, Lucy was able to reciprocate it and it's all good.

If you're into geeks, leprechaun costumes and even a Harry Potter reference here and there, then grab a copy of Love's Last Call now!
Beth Matthews is a California girl, born and raised. She’s a total geek, a movie buff, and a mediocre swing dancer. She lives in sunny SoCal with her boyfriend and two of the neediest housecats on the planet.

  1. This sounds like a really great book and I'm so curious about everything that seems to be involved with this story. Leprechauns? >.< Great review! :)
